Aboriginal history in Tasmania

The Format for this program

Each day we as a group head out to learn about the Aboriginal history in Tasmania. The program goes back into deep history and follows the history through to the current day. The day starts around 9.00am and typically finishes late afternoon. The program includes field trips to places of significant interest to support the program. The class is limited to 15 participants. This is one of a number of summer school programs offered by Odyssey Traveller Australia.

Summer School classes for mature and senior travellers

Odyssey offers a collection of week-long learning programs offered each January in Tasmania. Courses are refreshed for each year’s programs. Classes are limited to 15 people.

Over the last twenty-five years, Odyssey’s small group Summer School Program has given countless travellers an unforgettable educational and travel experience. Each summer, we prepare and offer fun and challenging special interest courses and programs designed to give travellers the options and opportunity to learn about history, religion, Australian culture, and the arts, among many other topics. These courses are designed in such a way that enthusiasts can deepen their knowledge of a particular topic or be initiated into new understandings on a subject.

We don’t quite live on campus, but we will be staying in a comfortable hotel in central Launceston for this course. We will enjoy welcome and farewell dinners in between our seminars, as well as daily morning tea.

These programs offered are tailor-made for mature-aged and senior travellers who are eager to explore in-depth a particular topic. Itinerary

7 days

Day 1: Launceston

The tour will begin with a welcome dinner at the hotel, where we have the chance to meet other Summer School participants.

Day 2: Launceston

Today the group learns about the deep time prehistoric content that leads into Tasmanian Aboriginal histories and cultures. Complimented by visiting the Cataract Gorge and also going to see the remains of a 15-million-year-old volcano core near the airport.

Day 3: Launceston

The following session would cover colonial history of Tasmania, but starting with early European explorers such as Abel Tasman, Marion de Fresne, James Cook, Nicolas Baudin. The group explores George Town, then to York Town and then back to Launceston.

Day 4: Launceston

Accommodation: TBA

Today class continues to examine colonial settlement and the Aboriginal communities. This afternoon we visit the local museum

Day 5: Launceston

Exploring Launceston. Architecture and how Launceston has the most diverse collection of architectural styles traversing many eras from colonial to post-modern brutalist…and some contemporary buildings of this century too.

Day 6: Launceston

Accommodation: TBA

Today we take a field trip out along the Tamar Valley to the coast exploring and viewing key locations of settlement and the colonial settlement.

Evening Tonight, we enjoy a farewell dinner at a Launceston restaurant.

Day 7: Launceston

After breakfast, the tour draws to a close.

They have fine-tuned their courses to allow for deep engagement on the part of participants.
