Folding team @ Odyssey Traveller

Welcome,

We are inspired to offer home computing to assist this research team “Folding@home,  in solving Covid-19 today and other diseases in the future . So Odyssey has formed a team today, April 16th 2020  that you can join and we can see our collective contribution to the work of this research group.  Lets us see what we can do to assist as as a team as we go about our daily lives and our computers can possibly be assisting in the unravelling through computer modelling Covid-19 and beyond.

I do not pretend to understand what I read in the field of computer science, I Understood Moore’s law  and as for medical research….well….. but this is the article from the on line edition of the Guardian…. calling for volunteers. Odyssey  saw there is a team option, so we thought it would be a good idea if we created a team from some members of our Travel community where interested in joining. Odyssey will send out regular updates on the team’s contribution and reminders on how to subscribe or delete  the software. Eventually deleting the team, will delete all users.

If you are not sure or comfortable with these suggested  instructions please discuss with the person who generally supports your pc.

When opening the software after installation you will be asked if you wish to be anonymous or part of a team. If you are Ok with being part of the team then these are the details;

The team name is; odysseystravellers

The team number is; 262071

How to join and contribute.

  • Go to the https://foldingathome.org/  website.
  • Click on the black “start folding button to OPEN a new window to allow you to download the relevant software package.
  1. Download the software and install onto your PC.
  2. When this screen appears; If you wish to be part of the collective then please enter in the  box for Name odysseytravellers and this is the Team number 262071 and press save.

Close the box, the “X” is top right and then check the settings on this page. We suggest folding only happens when you are working. These are the default settings after you register. Which has the program only running when you are using your computer. It runs in the background, and has no impact on your regular activities.

Leave the top box titled “I Support research fighting”  set at “ANY DISEASE” to allow the team to run the program associated with Covid-19.

To unsubscribe

To unsubscribe or leave the group, simply  delete the software by opening your “applications folder” that is the  folder where the operating software is located, clicking on the folder “Folding@home” and from the drop down menu select “uninstall” Folding@home. This action will remove the software.

What is Folding @ home

https://foldingathome.org/

This medical research  team is looking for one million subscribers to assist with their research work. All of the Odyssey Travellers PC’s are running this software to make a very small contribution to the mathematical modelling for the team to carry out their research with potentially through linking running one of the largest super computers in the world. This is the extract from their website.

Folding@home is a distributed computing project — people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

Protein folding is linked to disease, such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s disease, and many Cancers.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. “misfold”), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

What is protein folding?
Proteins are biology’s workhorses — its “nanomachines.” Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or “fold.” The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
