Straford Upon Avon

Stratford Upon Avon, otherwise known simply as the Stratford, is a town in England‘s west midlands, located within Warwickshire county. Stratford‘s most prominent claim to fame comes from its history as the birthplace of 16th century writer William Shakespeare, arguably the most famous playwright in the English language. Stratford is a charming town full of quaint architecture and a rich history, particularly for any visitors who enjoy theatre or with a literary inclination. Not only is Stratford Shakespeare’s birthplace, it holds a rich history of Shakespeare’s life including his school house, his mother Mary Arden’s farm, and Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, which remain open to visitors till this day.

Landmarks and Destinations

Visitors to Stratford will find one of the best ways to enjoy the town is a day tour or walking tour, given so much is accessible within walking distance. Whether that’s taking a walk through the town centre, stopping a local cafe, taking a walk to Henley street to see Shakespeare’s birthplace, or taking in the waterside sights of the River Avon. Stratford also plays host to a number of theatres, including the landmark Swan Theatre, and Royal Shakespeare Theatre, both of which hold performances of Shakespeare’s plays hosted by the famous Royal Shakespeare Company, the Globe theatre is in London. Some other landmarks to see while you’re in Stratford include the Holy Trinity Church, a small parish where Shakespeare’s grave is located, Bancroft Gardens by the theatre, the Stratford upon avon butterfly farm or the MAD museum. If you’re inclined to take a day trip other nearby locales, it’s worth visiting Warwick Castle further up the river, on Blenheim Palace further south towards Oxford.

Visiting Stratford

Like much of England, Stratford has a rather temperate climate year round, though you’re likely to expect a spell of rain at one point or another. Just be sure to pack a poncho or umbrella if you’re out on a walking tour. Stratford takes great pride in its literary history as the home of Shakespeare’s works, with the destinations associated with Shakespeare’s family kept in immaculate condition, all whilst surrounded by the charming countryside scenery and atmosphere. If you plan on staying for a time, there are plenty of accommodation options in Stratford, each with their own aesthetic and charm, whether that’s a hotel, cottage, or for the most adventurous even hobbit huts.
