Richard Wagner Ring Cycle Small Group Tour

This is a 12 day tour that includes 4 concerts by the Oper Leipzig. In this series Oper Leipzig together with the Gewandhaus Orchestra perform the famous Richard Wagner Ring Cycle, under the direction of Intendant and General Music Director Prof. Ulf Schirmer. The small group tour will see the opera performed in the city of Richard Wagner’s birth, Leipzig. We will not only experience his music, but also be shown the influences of culture and family on the extraordinary composer’s life.

Due to the special nature of this tour, we have limited the group size to 10 participants.

Overview: Upon arrival in Dresden we will check into the hotel. In the late afternoon, we have a welcome meeting followed by dinner.

For those who arrive early, there will be time to visit some of the city’s fine art galleries as well as to learn about its more recent past.

Accommodation: Two nights in NH Dresden Altmarkt or similar

Overview: The tour starts with a half day tour around the city of Dresden. The focus of the guided tour is of Wagner related sites in Dresden. In the afternoon, there will be a wine-tasting at Schloss Wackerbarth.

Overview: In the morning the group will travel to Graupa, where they will visit the Jagdschloss, which includes a multimedia exhibition: ‘Wagner in Saxony’.

The group will then travel from Graupa to Leipzig for a 5pm performance of “Das Rheingold”.

Overview: In the morning we take a guided city tour of Leipzig that follows in the steps of Wagner. After the tour, you will have the afternoon to spend as you wish. We will reconvene for a 5pm performance of the second part of the ring cycle, “Die Walkure.”

Overview: Today we visit Halle. The group will enjoy a walking tour of the town, famous as the birthplace of Baroque composer Georg Friedrich Händel. Their will be a short stop in Eisleben to see the city before the group returns to Leipzig. Wagner lived with relatives in Eisleben, after the death of his stepfather.

Overview: In the morning there is an excursion to the magnificent Colditz castle,  a former prisoner of war camp and now a museum, hostel and music academy. The entrance includes a guided tour.

We will then return to Leipzig to see the third part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, ‘Siegfried’.

Overview: In the morning, the tour travels to Naumburg. There, we will visit the beautiful Naumburg Cathedral before boarding an hour-long cruise from Saale to Freybourg. We will then transfer to Leipzig where the group will enjoy the final part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, ‘Gotterdammerung’.

Overview: This morning we travel from Leipzig to Plauen, where we will stop to view the town. From there, we will head to Markneukirchen for a visit to the Framus museum, which holds a wonderful variety of German instruments. We then travel to Bayreuth.

Accommodation: 2 nights Ramada Residenzschloss or similar

Overview: The group will begin the day with a guided tour of Bayreuth, where they will see the main sights that relate to the life of Wagner. In the afternoon we’ll visit the stunning Festspielhaus opera house, which includes a guided tour.

Accommodation: Overnight Ramada Residenzschloss or similar

Overview: The group will leave Bayreuth and travel to Munich. On their way we’ll stop at the Walhalla memorial, a hall of fame that includes important artists, composers, and other German cultural icons.
After arriving in Munich, a guide will lead us through the city’s highlights and tell stories of Wagner, including how he met King Ludwig II.

Accommodation: Two nights Eden Hotel Wolff or similar

Overview: Today we travel from Munich to Oberammergau, a town famous for its performance of a Passion Play, a tradition that dates back to 1634. After a guided tour of Passion Play Theatre, the group will have some free time to explore at our leisure, before returning to Munich.

In the evening, the group will enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

Overview: The tour concludes after breakfast.
