Madagascar: For the Curious

Tropical River in Masoala National Park

A stunning combination of jungles, beaches, and reefs, biodiversity awaits at every turn, thanks to its geographical isolation off the East coast of Africa.

An abundance of wildlife resides on the fourth largest island in the world, also the size of France. Lemurs and chameleons are the headline attractions whilst whale sharks and humpbacks cruise the undersea world.

Indri Indri, or the Babakoto, is the largest lemur on the isle

Fat-trunked baobab trees populate the landscape. More than 90 percent of the island’s mammals can only be found here.

Some 80 percent of plant life is classified as being endemic to the island.

A Brief History

The earliest evidence of human settlement dates back to 2,000 BC. Formal settlement is believed to have begun around 600AD. The arrival of Arabs, then the Portuguese, followed by the Pirates, and eventually the French in the 1850s, are responsible for the intriguing blend that is Madagascar’s culture.

Madagascar’s fascinating history in East Africa will surely have you on your toes.
