Sir Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy falls into the spectacular slipstream of his Lord of The Rings trio of films which pushed him into the very front rank of international producers and directors. What were the forces that propelled him into the company of Steven Spielberg and James Cameron? We explore the New Zealand locations of The Hobbit films, casting a fond eye back to Lord of the Rings and some of its locales, notably Wellington itself. In Wellington we explore the Miramar area and its gigantic studios in which Sir Peter and his long-time partner Sir Richard Taylor weave their magic, blending quite simply the world’s most advanced animation with a roll call of international motion picture actors, one of whom will conduct our tour, illuminating the astounding sets, locations and backdrops with personal and firsthand recollections of how the Hobbit trilogy was actually made.
